Pollution and water quality index of boreholes within unlined waste dumpsite in Nnewi, Nigeria

Abstract Borehole water has been the main source of drinking for communities living within Nnewi metropolis. The quality this borehole significantly affected by presence unlined waste dumpsites which release leachates. present study investigated physicochemical characteristics and located around environment dumpsite in Nnewi. In study, thirty-two (32) samples were collected from (16) control areas wet dry seasons. levels parameters determined using American Public Health Association (APHA) standard methods. was compared with World Organization (WHO) permissible limits. pollution index (PI) (WQI) also evaluated. results showed that only nitrite values area both seasons above WHO summation indices critical value 1 areas. WQI revealed heavily polluted most being underground contaminated through uncontrolled leachates dumpsite. contamination may not be related to but linked irregular disposal sites, wastewater infiltration run-off farmlands. good domestic purposes without proper treatment.
